As we learned in class, Chinese who immigrated were allowed
of the male gender only. This changed around the late 1940s, enlisted men were
allowed to go back and bring back a spouse. Through this story you see Ben, a
second generation Chinese American to his father who had lived in the US 20
years prior without his wife. Ben goes back to China in order to meet his
spouse to take back to America. In Takaki they talk about all he Chinese men in
America and the lack of women in the country because they did not want them to
be settling. This is made very obvious when it comes to Ben’s wedding banquet
and there are no females in the restaurant.
As they move to America the parents try to hold on to their
Chinese culture as the parents put a lot of pressure on the kids to have
children. Ben on the other hand has assimilated and become more Americanized
and is wanting to settle in before rushing to have kids and the pressure is
getting to him.
