The thing that I am going to take away from this class the most is the fact that the Model Minority Myth, is just that, a myth. This CRT term claims that Asian Americans are the smartest, and that everyone should model themselves like these people. However, this is not the case for all people of this "race". The reason I will take this with me is because I believed it for so long, I thought that Asians were all super smart and excelled in everything they did, which looking back on my assumptions now is crazy because I went to school with Asian Americans that did not meet the Ivy League Doctor status that I initially did.
The Model Minority Myth occurred because many of the first generation immigrants from China, Japan, Korea, etc. did not want their children to grow up to be the laundry man or farm laborer that they were forced to become when they came to this country. So the parents pushed education on their children in the hopes that they would become successful in America. Yet there are many examples in which this is not the case. One example of this minority myth being disproven is in the excerpt from Monkey King by Patricia Chao. In this story we meet a young girl who dropped out of college to get married, got a divorce and is now severely depressed. "My cut began to throb. I pressed a corner of the blanket against it. PIECE OF MEAT." (Chao 256) overall this is not what a "successful" person sounds like, and it is not the footsteps that anyone would want to follow. However things like this happen to everyone and this piece sheds light on the humanity of Asian Americans; they are just like anyone else.
